April Shines Light on Autism Awareness

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Debbie Ferrell didn't know anything was wrong until her son Nathan was 3 years old. He wasn't talking at 2, but Nathan's pediatrician assured Debbie that boys just develop more slowly than girls. "It was my first. I thought he was just developing normally," she said. "I'd heard about autism, but I didn't know the signs. I didn't know that tip-toe walking and hand slapping were big signs, or lining things up in a row." Ferrell said she didn't know where to turn after her son, now 8, was diagnosed with autism at age 3. "Your world falls apart. You're in shock. You're in a store, and my kid can't communicate his wants and needs and people are staring at you wondering, 'Why can't he do that?' " she said. Now the newly elected president of the Autism Society of America's south central West Virginia chapter, Ferrell says she wants to keep other parents from feeling so helpless.
